Belz Leaped the Gap
Toronto Star, July 13, 1904
Young Fellow Took Walton’s Place in the Daring Ride at Hanlan’s
Bert Walton, the whirlwind declined to whirl down the chute and leap
the gap at Hanlan’s yesterday but Oliver Belz, a lad of about 20 years
of age took his place and performed the feat.
Walton declined to let Belz use his heavy wheel and Belz used an
ordinary bicycle taking out the pedals and replacing them with a stick
as a foot rest. It was a thrilling ride and the leap into the bay was
about 30 feet.
Belz lives at 253 Simcoe Street. He was at one time a C.P.R. messenger
and an expert bicyclist. Last summer he rode in a “cycle whirl” which
visited a number of small towns throughout the province.
Belz will continue the stunt all week and go on today at 4 p.m. and
8:15 p.m.just as if it was an ordinary thing to do.
