Meet at Exhibition Produces Keen Riding – McLeod Stars

Toronto Star, August 28, 1933

The bicycle boys put on a great show in front of the grandstand at the Exhibition Saturday afternoon. Amateurs and professionals vied with one another to set up a great card of ankling events. A tall rangy Toronto youngster, Bob McLeod, put on a great show in the simon-pure section, winning all three races carded.

McLeod started his racing career this season as a contestant in the telegraph boys’ section and from then on this ankler, who appears destined for higher company, has just about cleaned up everything in sight. He started the ball rolling Saturday by winning the half mile, came back shortly afterwards to triumph easily in the mile and then made a show of the field in the two-mile to earn for himself three Canadian championships in one afternoon.

The finals for the amateur races:

One mile novice:
1. Ray MacMahon, Toronto
2. Tom Ford Jr., Scarborough,
3. D. Hodgins, Toronto. Time 2:37

Half mile:

2. Harold Fielding, Toronto,
3. George Turner, Ottawa. Time: 1:10.

Note: George Crompton was also a Toronto telegraph messenger. He and McLeod would both go on to represent Canada in the 1936 Olympics.
