Dead Cyclist Identified as Wesley McLean,
Age 21

Champion and Fellow Messenger Reveals Identity

For nine hours the body of C.N.R. telegraph messenger, Wesley McLean,
21 of Manning Ave. lay unidentified at the city morgue until a fellow
worker, Robert McLeod, British Empire 10 mile cycling champion visited
the chief coroner’s offices and established identity.
McLean on his way home from work shortly after 10 o’clock last night
was fatally injured following a collision with a motor car at Harbord
and Shaw streets.
A cycling enthusiast who often raced against his fellow messenger
McLeod, British Empire Champion, McLean was riding a racing type [note:
fixed gear] of bicycle at the time of the accident. According to police
McLean was dragged or hurled nearly 50 feet from his bicycle by the car
whose driver, Harland Freemantle, 19, of Beaumaris, was arrested on a
manslaughter charge by Detective MacArthur.
Freemantle appeared in men’s police court today and was released on
$5,000 bail supplied by his father.
