Dead Cyclist Identified as Wesley McLean, Age 21

Robert McLeod, Empire Champion and Fellow Messenger Reveals Identity

Toronto Star, November 24, 1934

For nine hours the body of C.N.R. telegraph messenger, Wesley McLean, 21 of Manning Ave. lay unidentified at the city morgue until a fellow worker, Robert McLeod, British Empire 10 mile cycling champion visited the chief coroner’s offices and established identity.

McLean on his way home from work shortly after 10 o’clock last night was fatally injured following a collision with a motor car at Harbord and Shaw streets.

A cycling enthusiast who often raced against his fellow messenger McLeod, British Empire Champion, McLean was riding a racing type [note: fixed gear] of bicycle at the time of the accident. According to police McLean was dragged or hurled nearly 50 feet from his bicycle by the car whose driver, Harland Freemantle, 19, of Beaumaris, was arrested on a manslaughter charge by Detective MacArthur.

Freemantle appeared in men’s police court today and was released on $5,000 bail supplied by his father.
