Last week I wrote that the private automobile, the private and personal
transportation “unit” was insane. Here are some of your replies:
Your article suggests a generally held point of view, that is,
that the car is basic to democracy and human equality in our society.
The fallacy of this is well documented. My own way of dealing with the
situation is to provide a realistic alternative to people.
In the downtown area, the volume of traffic is taking a tremendous toll
on our city and towards the end of improving our circumstances
downtown, I and a number of people are building a small business called
Sunwheel Bicycle Couriers. It’s a delivery service provided on bicycles
in the downtown area. We’re finding that an increasing number of
businesses are looking forward to our service and find us reliable and
dependable all year round.
By offering this service we are also hoping to provide an incentive in
the long run to politicians and to businesses to provide lane-safe
parking and amenities such as showers and locker rooms to person who
ride their bicycles if they could do so safely on the streets and if
they could have a place to change when they got to work.
