Wheeler Dealers
Toronto Star, May 25, 1980
Neither rain, nor hail, nor sleet, nor snow, nor traffic jams, nor flat
tires will delay these couriers from their appointed rounds.
You’re right we’re not talking about the post office. We’re talking
about Sunwheel Bicycle Couriers who’ve been wheeling madly around
Toronto’s downtown since last May, making deliveries for lawyers,
investment firms, graphic arts companies and others.
The company is the brainchild of 37 year-old Hilda Tiessen and in its
first year it has grown from a staff of three students to a staff of
full-time and four-part-time cyclists.
“At the time I started Sunwheel, I was already politically involved
with trying to get some amenities for bicycle riders,” she said
“I’ve always been concerned with traffic problems downtown –
congestion, pollution – and this is a logical extension.”
Besides their obvious environmental advantages, Sunwheel Couriers are
cheaper than you for-wheeled couriers and they’re fast. They operate
year-round and their head office is t 455 Spadina Ave.
