Coding Saves Word and Time

by Walter Stefaniuk, "You Asked Us",

Toronto Star, February 27, 1998

Q: At the end of a police radio call, they say 10-4. What isthe significance of 10-4? Why not some other combination of numerals?

A: The 10-4 reply simply means okay. The numerical coding usedby emergency services saves words and time on their busy radio frequencies.

Other combinations carry different messages. For example:

10-9 Repeat message
10-13 Description of road conditions or condition at scene
10-18 Assignment completed
10-26 Detain individual
10-45Dead body at scene
10-64 Proceed with caution
10-78 Officer needs assistance
10-100 Bomb threat
