A bike courier looks on in shock yesterday after seeing a fellow
messenger crushed to death under the wheels of a big rig in Manhattan.
The victim, Darren Lewis, 20, was killed on the corner of West 29th
Street and Ninth Avenue at about 9 a.m.
Another courier, Lusiano Prado, 30, from The Bronx, had shared a
cigarette with his ill-fated buddy moments before and told The Post,
"It should have been me.
"I was meant to go first, but I said to him to go ahead.
"This is the key from God telling me to quit."
Postal worker Louis Nelson, 47, of Manhattan, said Lewis sped up to get
in front of the truck but slid under the back wheels.
The driver, as well as Nelson, immediately ran to Lewis.
"We tried to talk to him but he was dead. He was out. The tire had
crushed him," Nelson said.
Noah Budnick, a spokesman from the lobby group Transportation
Alternatives, said the city must provide special cycle zones to prevent
further tragedies.
