A quiet revolution is taking place on the roads of Cambridge as local
bicycle courier, Outspoken Delivery, establishes itself as a viable
alternative to van-based distribution about the city.
Set up by brothers, Peter and Robert King in January, Outspoken's aim
was to create an emission-free alternative, to transport goods in and
around Cambridge.
Its solution was an updated version of the traditional delivery bike,
capable of moving small to medium sized packages, and chosen as the
perfect antidote for an ancient city struggling with its modern
transport requirements.
The bikes themselves were designed by Mike Burrows in Norwich who
created the Lotus time-trial bike that Chris Boardman rode to Olympic
Gold at Barcelona in 1992. Capable of carrying up to 100kg, Outspoken's
fleet has carried wine, documents, flowers, picnics and even a DNA
genetic analysis centrifuge. The company's objective is to remove
50,000 vehicle journeys from the roads in the first two years of
trading.
